The triathlon side of my life started unofficially as a swimmer for the majority of my life. I've heard this is the hardest of the three disciplines (though coincidentally the shortest as well), so while swimming at LA Fitness someone told me I should try the sport of triathlons out. My brother in law Nick just happened to be making a bet at the same time with his cousin that someone could do a sprint tri on no training just to prove a point. What happened after that has cost me a lot of money, lots of soreness and even more time. I happened to be curious about the sport just in time to help my brother in law prove a point at the Naperville Sprint Triathlon in 2006. The race was fun, I hadn't ridden a bicycle prior to it in at least four years and it was the first time I ran more then one mile continuously ever in my entire life. I was hooked.
This next chapter is much more fool hardy, but is still being written. Just as randomly, a child hood friend we'll call the Firefighter was also gaining interest in the sport and offers to me that we should do an Ironman together in 2007. Without pause I said yes and made my giant leap from sprint distance to Ironman AZ with only one other sprint built in their just to show how poorly planned my race prep was. Though the first Ironman was a grueling experience I had already paid the money for the next one and so made good on my registration once again, going through the regimen of Ironman training. I am still training with the Firefighter and learning more each day about the sport that I might never master. I have no desire to go pro, but love setting new personal records and hope to one day race Kona ( even if by lottery). My training is very awkward being an airline pilot always training on different equipment, at different times of day at different altitudes with no real stability to my schedule. The wonderful part is my training never gets monotonous and always stays interesting as I pursue my goals. For now I enjoy trying to improve, setting goals and accomplishing them while flying around the country for Southwest airlines and training for the next race.
